Pass Ports – All That You Should Know

A passport is an internationally recognized travel document that verifies your identity. In addition, it’s a document that requests another government to allow you to visit their country and be afforded assistance and protection. In the United States, passports are issued by the US government through the State Department.

When Do You Need A Passport

First, when is a US Passport needed? Basically, it’s necessary when travelling outside the United States and its territories. Even when travelling to Mexico or Canada, there are certain requirements that a passport can satisfy because all persons entering Canada must show proof of identity and citizenship. US Citizens, including children, who want to travel past the “border zone” and into the interior of Mexico also need a valid US Passport.

E-Passports

How does one go about getting a US Passport? The first step is applying for one. Forms for passport application can be found online as well as at the US Department of State. The website lists specific instructions for first time applicants and for those who simply need to renew their passports. As of August 2007, the US has only been issuing e-passports. These are the same as the traditional ones with the added inclusion of a small computer chip.

Download Your Application

You can complete the required form after downloading and printing it. Apart from the website and the US Department State office, you can also apply at the US Post office, libraries and at online passport assistance sites. One thing to remember after filling out the form is to wait for the instruction of an official passport agent to put your signature on it. Never sign without being given the instruction and you signature must be witnessed by an agent.

Primary Documents

The application must be submitted in person along with primary evidence of identity and citizenship. This can be the applicant’s birth certificate of previous passport. Secondary evidence documents may be provided. Secondary evidence would include a combination of early public records such as a baptismal certificate or school record. Other acceptable evidence is listed on the website.

Other Acceptable Documents

Secondary documents such as a driver’s license or a previous passport that is undamaged will be acceptable. If you can’t provide a primary identification document, secondary documents will do. Just check the list and choose from the provided options of acceptable secondary identification documents.

Secondary Identification

Secondary identification must be a combination of documents such as a social security card plus a credit card, employee I. D. or library card. You may also bring an identifying witness who has valid primary identification. A photocopy of identification documents also must be submitted, showing the front and back of your document. Fees are then paid and you will provide two passport photos, which must meet passport photo requirements.

Expedited passports can also be acquired so be sure to check with the American pass ports agency if you have this need. Pay attention to the date on your passports as you may need a US pasport renewal. US Passports have a validity of ten years and for minors, the validity is five years. Once you have acquired your US passports, you are now free to travel internationally.
