Sayulita Life Best Secret Vacation Destination on Mexican Riviera Nayarit
Tour Sayulita Mexico on the Mexican Riviera Nayarit
Having a good time in Mexico is not difficult. A journey into Puerto Vallarta places you in a sea of fancy resorts and swanky entertainment choices that are common to the Mexican party scene. But for a more authentic experience, you should take a day away from PV and drive up to the community of Sayulita.
Just an hour from Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita is nothing like the big resort towns. Sayulita sits on a tiny bay on the north shores of Nayarit, a state on the Pacific coast of Mexico. The region was not settled until the early 1940s, and even then it was basically just large shared farms and simple fishing operations. In the early sixties, surfers happened on Sayulita’s awesome waves and – following the government highway project connecting the town with Puerto Vallarta – the crowds began to grow. Actually, Sayulita is widely hailed as one of the primary surfing locations in the world|the western hemisphere|North America} and surf shops dot the landscape.
Regardless of its rural roots Sayulita has plenty of interesting things to do. The people have really been able to maintain the rural quaintness of the area with just enough facilities and commerce to have fun. Locals still continue their traditional festivals and parades – especially during major religious observations – and travelers are always welcome to join in. There are several dozen restaurants from exclusive to tiny huts serving up quick, inexpensive meals. Tours of the thick jungle all around are widely available – some of them to the scattered Aztec sites which have been discovered in the past ten years. The biodiversity of the still-virgin jungle east of Sayulita is astounding. A couple international schools operate on-going biology labs in the jungle here, studying Sayulita’s vast array of bird and reptile species.
Multi-colored Mexican and Aztec-influenced architecture dominates most of Nayarit. Color is every place you look as the tropical environment promotes the growth of brilliant flowers that seem to spill from every balcony and grow in every available spot.
Sayulita is not exactly a backwater location, however. In the past few years there has been the construction of a couple luxury resorts, and the whole Riviera Nayarit area is now popular as a vacation home or retreat for North Americans. In December and January, the surfing is the best it gets and the beaches can be crowded. But again, Sayulita has maintained its local culture, and it is not difficult to locate in this pleasant village.
