Student Travel: A Guide To Food
It can be scary when you undertake student travel. For many embarking on it, it will be their first time alone in a foreign country; fending for themselves in new lands and experiencing new cultures.
Prior to starting their journey, one of the main concerns for students is how they will adapt to feeding themselves in new lands. This can be worrying for several reasons; what to eat, where to eat and how to eat aren’t straightforward tasks when you’re in a foreign country. This guide will outline how you can ensure you eat correctly when on student travel.
Nutrition
Only through eating the right food can you ensure you are at your absolute peak in your new ecosystem. It is easy to get worn out when you are travelling, what with all those long journeys, late nights and hostel beds. A balanced diet is imperative in ensuring you are feeling energetic, as well as keeping you in a good mood.
When you travel to exotic places you will be faced with cuisines and foods you have never tasted before. It is difficult to predict how your body will react to these new food types. Don’t bite off more than you can chew with these new cuisines. Wait until your body acclimatises before you take on new meats and seafood. Give your stomach a rest on a few evenings by seeking a Western fast food establishment.
Budget
Most students travel on an absolute shoestring. They will therefore look to spend as little as they can on filling themselves up. Cheap and filling dishes like noodles and pasta are a firm favourite with those on student travel.
Always try to utilise the kitchen in the hostel if it is provided. Communal kitchens can be used to cook in groups, which is far cheaper than eating out. Try picking up your ingredients at the local town market. This will work out both cheaper and fresher!
Your health is not worth compromising for the sake of a bit of money; always eat well.
